NEBAG Newsletter December 2013

With Christmas almost upon us time to review current issues and news.

1. NEBAG AGM
The AGM will be held as last year at Hexham Golf Club on Sunday 26 January 2014 at 2pm. The Agenda and last year’s Minutes will be sent out prior to the meeting and we hope most members will be able to attend and contribute. As last year a meal will be available from 12:30 at the Clubhouse at a cost of approximately £12 per head. This was very popular last year and gave members the chance to meet and chat before the AGM.

2. VET TALK 8 December 2013
David Parkins of Intake Vets gave an excellent illustrated talk at Wall Village Hall to 14 members, many of whom were new to NEBAG. The lively question and answer session carried on afterwards at the Hadrian Hotel over lunch and the odd drink and was enjoyed by all.

3. 2013 SHOWS
The northern circuit of alpaca shows at NWAG Carlisle, Northumberland, Westmorland and the Yorkshire Group Show at Thirsk were all very well attended by NEBAG members with a high degree of success and championships won. Full results are available on the BAS website.  The Northumberland County Show organized by NEBAG was at the new venue at Bywell in a beautiful parkland setting. The alpaca tent was centrally located and as usual proved very popular throughout the day. Nick Harrington-Smith judged with Barbara Hetherington ably apprenticing and the Championship went to a worthy winner Beck Brow Explorer. In 2014 we are having a larger marquee to allow a bigger entry. Put it in your diary for Bank Holiday Monday 26 May 2014. The Futurity at the NEC was the largest Alpaca Show in Europe with almost 450 alpacas in the halter classes. NEBAG members Barnacre, Beck Brow, Fallowfield, Fowberry and Nero Black entered animals with great success ,proving you do not need to have a large herd to be successful. Unfortunately there is no Futurity planned for 2014 but may return in 2015.

4. 2014 BAS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Traditionally the National Show has been held in the south of England making it particularly challenging to attend for alpaca breeders in the North. This year a new committee led by Barbara Hetherington is organizing the event with a team including Melanie Douglas and with Paul Vaclik doing the website so NEBAG members are heavily involved. The venue selected is the International Centre at Telford in Shropshire TF3 4JH which has excellent facilities and easy access from the M6 and M54. It has been a challenge getting the BAS Board to accept this “northern” venue and it is in all our interests to make this show a success by supporting it. We have fewer breeders in the north but have some fabulous alpacas and we always punch well above our weight when we attend national competitions so put this in your diaries and let’s show them!

Nick Harrington-Smith will be judging the halter classes in tandem with top Australian judge Jenny Jackson providing a balanced international evaluation. The fleece show will be judged by Rob Bettinson and Mary-Jo Smith. An excellent programme of wide ranging seminars will be held on the Saturday followed by a champagne reception and Gala Dinner. The BAS AGM will be held on the Friday evening. Even if you do not enter animals make the effort to attend what will be a great event closer to home than usual !

Best wishes and Happy Christmas,

Mike Douglas – Chairman NEBAG
